Ελιά και Δυόσμος (Olive & Μint) - Marina fine dining

I have to begin by saying, what a wonderful afternoon! I can't think of a better way to have spent this sunny afternoon other than dining at "Elia & Diosmos" (Olive & Μint), overlooking the sailboats, yachts and still waters of the Kalamata marina. I would put this restaurant in the category of fine dining and very 'fine' it was. The space was smart and chic, decorated with selected art pieces and calming colours. We particularly liked, that rather than accenting a wall with contrasting colour, they adopted this concept by accenting three tables, two red and one black as opposed to the open wood colour of the other tables. We had a good feeling about this place from our very first acquaintance.

As we glanced at the menu the friendly server dropped off a basket of bread and a small plate of olives, garnished with a mint leaf, as suggested in the restaurant's name. We dipped our bread in the olive oil to find that it was definitely local, fresh and most likely off the owner's farm. We continued to order our lunch starting with a Greek salad, a mixed green salad with parmesan and an order of zucchini fritters. Furthermore, for our main course, I had the carbonara and Iliana had the chicken fillet. The ambiance paired very well with wine so we ordered a half litre of red to go with our meals.

Each plate was tastier than the next! All of the appetizers were excellent and the zucchini fritters were perfectly fried without being overly greasy. I was impressed with my pasta as the cream sauce was evenly distributed and not at all overwhelming. Iliana's chicken fillet was served with very nice presentation and apart from being tasty and well complimented by the sauce, the chicken breast itself was juicy and cooked to perfection. It was evident that each dish was made and served with care as it should be in a gourmet restaurant. In addition, the portions were just right!

We are very content to have discovered Elia & Diosmos and will most certainly be back to sample the seafood on their menu. After treating us to some chocolate drizzled ice cream, the owner informed us that the restaurant will be moving to the bigger corner space just next door. We will be sure to visit them and recommend that you do too!

Νερόμυλος (Watermill) - Field trip to Agia Theodora

If you are looking for a place to simply get away from the city for a few hours, eat good food, enjoy nature on a small hike and witness the magic of the chapel Agia Theodora, we have just the spot for you! There are two routes to get to Agia Theodora, one is the short but windy road with lots of debris from the fallen cliff rocks via Diavolitsi and the other is the long route via Megalopoli. We risked it and took the short route. It was scenic and breathtaking but yes, the driving at some mountain turns required extra care from the random fallen rocks blocking the road. Warning! This is not the route to take at night. We arrived at Neromylos (Watermill) Tavern and Grill and decided to stop for some lunch before going off to explore the area and the famous church.

There were a couple of different options as to where to sit. The inside of Neromylos Tavern was like a big log cabin with a beautiful big fireplace that was burning upon our arrival and the outside of the Tavern had tables set up right over the running creek water on the trees. These sitting areas resembled tree houses! We thought that we would get a taste of both. We planned our day so that we would have lunch inside by the fireplace, go for our hike to see the famous chapel, then come back for coffee and dessert atop one of the tree houses.

Prior to ordering, the server automatically brought us some warm brochettes with grilled tomato and garlic placed on top of village sour dough bread. Unfortunately we didn't take a picture to display as we were so hungry from the drive that we dug right into the brochettes. Our deepest apologies... We ordered a few different plates to share that included wild greens, homemade tarama, fried battered zucchini and a farm rooster with spaghetti. We were delighted with most of the dishes. The fried zucchini was much too greasy thus we had a difficult time eating more than one or two pieces each. The rest, however, was excellent, just like a home cooked meal. Our favourite was the farm rooster with spaghetti that was accompanied with homemade mitzithra cheese and tomato sauce. After lunch, the friendly server brought us some sliced apples with sweetened cherries for dessert.

As planned, post meal we followed the trail for a short hike toward the chapel in order to enjoy nature and simultaneously aid digestion. We visited the beautiful Agia Theodora that has quite a story as to how the 13 trees grow out of her roof. We followed the trail back to Neromylos where we sat to have our Greek coffees and our traditional Greek sweetened cherries "dessert of the spoon". The view, nature and the whole experience was very relaxing and perfect for our short getaway. Before we left to go back to Kalamata we visited the Tavern's watermill (where its name comes from) and we watched as the mill spun and ground the wheat to make flour.  Our little Saturday field trip was absolutely delightful! We recommend the spot and the tavern for your next weekend getaway.

New Opening-!

All American Burger at "The Burgery"

One rainy miserable day we needed a pick-me-up and decided on a burger with a view so we drove down to Kalamata beach and lunched at "The Burgery". Had the weather been sunny we would have chosen to sit on the patio along the beach but to avoid getting drenched, we picked a nice table for two on the balcony. The location was exactly what we needed to enjoy the rain rather than let it bring us down.

Having solved the issue of location, it was time for the comfort food. I chose the buffalo salad with breaded chicken, cheddar cheese, egg, lettuce, tomato and cucumber but Iliana had a more difficult time deciding since she wanted a burger and there was quite a big selection. She decided to keep it simple and authentic, thus ordered the All American Burger with cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato and onions. Both of our meals were just what we needed.

The burger really was "all American" with the focus of the meat patty being literally "on the meat" contrary to what we are used to with Greek meat patties that are filled with onions and different herbs. The presentation of the burger was also very neat as it was served with a knife thrusted right down the middle and thick potato wedges rather than skinny french fries. From the presentation and the flavours it was obvious that everything was made in-house staying true to their slogan "made fresh and with love".

We enjoyed our afternoon and got all the comfort we were seeking on that rainy day. We will most certainly come back to sample some of the other "all American" burgers with their cool names like the California Burger, the Arugula Burger, the Plumber and the Firehouse Extra Spicy Burger...if we can only decide...

Ποιος ψήνεται...για καφέ στη χόβολη;
